Want to learn how to build scale model cars better? Follow along as I build my favorite models. I'll share tips and tricks that I have learned in my 20 years of building.
Does Resin 3D Print Angle Matter? Let's do an experiment
There has been a lot of talk lately online about what the best angle for printing model car bodies. I decided to do an experiment to see for myself. Join me in the experiment.

Could you provide what was your left to right degree of tilt. Thanks
I wrote it right on the pieces?
I can't get chitubox to launch I ran the installer and when it gets to launch I get an error message
I would reboot and try again. Not sure what the problem is.
Great discussions.
Thanks for watching Don! Everyone loves Frank 😎
Good stuff!
Thank you, I’m glad that you found this video helpful.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with printing. It helped me make some decisions. Greetings from Brazil.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching and leaving me feedback👍
When you print a Bilingham model what specifications do you set the printer too?
For those prints I printed them at .025 resolution 2.4 sec exposure. The rest was standard settings. Some of the pieces had to be done a couple times to get perfect.
Where did you get the wash tub?
I bought the wash and cure station from Amazon when I bought my first printer. It is Anycubic brand but they all work the same.
I thought you'd already basically covered this when printing the hoonicorn and other bodies? That yes, angled in two rotations was best.
Correct, this video was for meta search. Most people don’t bother to watch longer videos when all they want is the answer to a question.
Funny enough I have that Valour also looking in a similar state! I've got about 5 painted bodies.. not finished
So I’m not the only one that does this? Lol 😂. Thanks for watching and leaving me a comment bud.
Very helpful subject James, thank you.
Thanks for watching and leaving me a comment Mike👍
@@ScaleModelExperiment Always a pleasure my friend, if i can help you and James in any way please let me know.
Interesting information, seems I might need to rethink my channel. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
I’m no expert these are my opinions
@ScaleModelExperiment nonsense man, don't sell yourself short, you've had incredible success in this platform and others. You're more than qualified
@scaleffect Thank you! I’m still just James 😎
The Internet can be SOOOOO frustrating ! I'm just trying to find reference photos of the REAL 2021 Dodge Challenger R/T simply so I can see it the rear trunk spoiler hugs the trunk or is it elevated a little bit. I know it's not suppose to be off the trunk by ALOT. The photos on the side of the box is from a 1:1 photo of the real car. I am not sure about that but anyway, the spoiler IS not lifted at all from this photo. Why am I making a big deal over this ? Lol. I am ready to paint this car model. I am kind of anal when it comes to accuracy . My model building skills are gradually getting better but I want to be accurate. These kits cost A LOT of deniro only to do a mediocre job. Should I paint the body separate from the spoiler. Wait till it 100% cures , then add the spoiler, or do I keep test fitting the spoiler until it's flush ,glue it in place, then paint it ?Lol.
I mounted it after the stripes.
Have you experimented with anti-aliasing in Chitubox?
I have not, I think that’s a great idea for a follow up video to angles. Say I print at 37 degrees and test each anti aliasing setting?
Lots of great memories to been seen here (though it's best viewed on mute). The music doesn't work with the subject matter. We're looking at model kits here, not the Grand Canyon,
Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately they were playing music at the venue over loud speakers so I couldn’t leave it in the video due to copywriting. What sort of music would you prefer to appeal to the masses?
@@ScaleModelExperiment Given the choice, car related songs from the sixties and seventies.
@MWM-x6h no such thing in UA-cam library of copyright free music.
@@ScaleModelExperiment ☹
James did you use an angle when you printed these or follow Bill's video on printing them flat?
I printed them at an angle.
Thanks for sharing James ❤😊
Of course my friend👍
Are you familiar with the Arctan (layer height/pixel width) formula? Every printer has a specific angle which minimizes the stair step effect for flat surfaces. Phrozen sonic mini 8k has a pixel width of .022mm. If I print at 20microns for maximum Z resolution my angle is: Arctan (.020/.022) = 42.27deg. For my Phrozen Transform the angle is ArcTan (.050/.076) = 37.66deg. Of course with full car bodies, the roof and sides will always be at different angles, but you can at least optimize for the roof and hood which tend to be flat and the main points of interest anyways.
Correct, that’s why I did the example at 37 degrees. That’s the magic number for my printer.
Very cool video. With those tilts do you run into a lot of support clean up on the body?
I put all of my supports on the bottom and inside of the body. So for the most part I’m cleaning up just the edges, rockers and wheel lips.
Thanks James for this great video!!
Of course Luke, thanks for watching and leaving me a comment👍
I'm glad I found this channel! I'm considering buying the new saturn 4 ultra 16k 3D resin printer, because I like making models a lot, and it's more cost effective than buying them in kits.
Hi Barry, 3d printed kits are not cheaper than plastic model kits. Once you consider the expense of the equipment and supplies you are not saving. BUT, the variety of stuff that is available is amazing and it’s fun to print your own unique stuff. I wish I was in the market for a new printer as I would buy the new 16k machine for myself😁
You have amazing talent.
Thank you so much Carl, I appreciate the support 👍
3 words "Pretty dam amazing" and very generous of Bill to share these
I totally agree with you Doc, he is beyond generous 👍

James: I apologize for my criticisms and I won’t bother you any more. I would also apologize to Frank Steffens but he has blocked me. If you will pass along my apologies to him also, I won’t bother him anymore either.
I can do only 2D print for my model projects. XD
Thanks for watching DVDW 👍😎
this would be better with a little primer and better lighting so you can truly see the surfaces but good on you for showing that there is no “magic angle“.
Understood, primer would have shown the texture better. Trust me the lighting was there 😁
Great and informative video. Having just bought a 3D resin printer for use with my model building, I really appreciate your time in producing this video. Thanks!
Thank you so much Ken, I truly appreciate your generous gift. I’ll keep doing experiments with the resin printers to not only teach but explore techniques. Thanks again, James😁
Interesting video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Mike👍 I see so many people disagree about print angles so I had to do the experiment 🤓
Very usefull video, maybe make another using various anti-aliasing settings ??
That’s a good point. Maybe do the 45 degrees with various levels of AA to see if I can get a perfect print?
Very good video James. I'm sure that printer, resin, temp and slicer settings all come into play. I think the 45 deg hood would have been perfect if there were supports around the perimeter edge.
I forgot to ask, were you using any anti-aliasing at all?
You’re absolutely right, changing any of those things can change the final outcome.
@modelcarsandmayhem8089 I don’t use AA at all. I never experimented with it. Time for another video I guess 😁
Superb as usual! The main difficulty is really the fact that with complex objects you always have some faces at 0 angles. And it takes almost the same amount of time both to draw the object in CAD and to place it in the most effective way on a printing bed. It makes me nuts sometimes.
For sure, it’s a trade off… time spent on the computer vs time spent on the printer vs time spent at the bench fixing. It’s all time spent. Choose your favorite I guess. I’m lazy so I’d rather spend the time on the computer and printer.
Thank you for doing this video, so helpful. Ill be creating my setup soon. Got the printer, need to get the W & C station then almost there.
Thanks for watching👍 just remember that what works for me in my environment may not work for you. I talk with friends that use a 1.5 sec exposure time and print faster lift speeds and don’t have any issues.
@ Yes thank you, Im watching loads of peoples' resin printing channels. The FDM printers have shown test, test, test to find the right settings, so hopefully the learning curve will be slightly less. Im not a newbie to 3d printing just the resin side. Thank you for your help, much appreciated.
@piccadillymodelrailways of course! My pleasure!
👍
Thanks Travis👍

Haha, sorry don’t have any at our house.
YES IT'S IMPORTANT 👍
Yes it does Gary! Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks, always wondered about the optimum print angle
I had to do the experiment for myself. I was actually suprised by the 45 degree one.
stop wondering. There is no single optimum print angle. It always depends on the part and how it’s going to be used.
@ good point. The whole purpose of the experiment was to show at what angle do you see the least amount of print lines on a flat surface.
Good info ✅👍
Thanks For watching Ronny 👍
Awesome segment, watching 👀 I'll be back at the end 😊
Thanks for clarifying that Jim! I’ve tried to tell folks that there is no one size fits all when it comes to tilt angles for printing. Some will swear by printing flat for everything, but I can see as you pointed out lots of woodgraining on the flatter areas such as the roof and hood on their prints. Also, the size of the car will matter greatly. When I printed my ‘59 Cadillac Limo months ago, because the car was so big, I do believe the tilt angle was somewhere in the 30°+ range. It took waaay long (over 24 hours), but I had no issues with woodgraining, or any Z axis shifting. Thanks for the tip about the heater! I wonder if Phrozen has something similar for their printers? Right now, I keep a small ceramic heater near the door opening to keep the workroom warm, because there’s no heater grate in that room. I have a thermometer on the table, and the temp stays around 72° which I’ve had no problems. It’s when it gets in the 60’s like you mentioned that issues occur. If it’s a very cold day out, the room can stay chilly because it’s against an outside wall, and despite the rest of the house being okay, that room can stay cold. Thanks for the great video! 👍🏾
Hey Bill, I use another brand heater in my other printer. That one has a thermostat but isn’t as pretty. You’re so right about what may work for some may not for others. I wanted to show the truth in this video. No mistaking what I saw.
Thanks for the vid bro, so helpful! Question.....after 4 base coats of a metallic purple, finish is quite rough to the touch, but even and solid. Before applying 2K clear , should I sand out the roughness, or you reckon the 2K will handle it and provide smooth finish as-is? Rookie question but I am scared to sand and leave the base coat uneven.
Clear will not even out rough base coat. To get a good finish you’ll need to flatten the base before clear. Sorry
@@ScaleModelExperiment OK, thanks. It was SMS Auto Wild Violet. I expected it to be glossy finish but is dry and gritty like super matt lol Will start with a 1000 grit wet and see where that gets me. Lovely colour though. Will let you know how it goes. Cheers mate!
@waynobeav2154 I would guess that either you didn’t thin it enough or you were too far away with your spray and it dried before it got to the model.
What is the tube you're using to decant the aerosol?
That started as a pipette that I cut to the right size.
I feel like saturn 4 will be good for me What resin should I use for model cars
I like to use Elegoo 8k resin in vanilla and white smoke. Some people like the darker colors, I like tbs lighter so I can paint them in light colors without a lot of primer.
@ScaleModelExperiment I saw your episode on windshields I can't find a lot of info Seams like there is room to fill that space As in develop a reliable process and offer them for sale Maybe we could partner on it
@ here’s the truth… it takes 3-5 tries to get a usable windshield vacuum forming. The sheets aren’t cheap so say you were to sell them, you’d have $6 in material (resin plus plastic) invested. Who would pay $12 for a window set? You’d have to sell 10 to make it worth your time and what kit would you certainly sell 10 of?
@ScaleModelExperiment At this point I feel the need to explain my self I'm 59 with a job that pays well I have no aspirations to start a model part supply business That being said The pre printed resin models I see are priced at $100 and do not come with a windshield So with out the equipment to print the buck and vacuform the windshield I would think I'd be glad to pay $12 And I would look at any income as return on investment for the equipment By the way I get a lot out of your videos Thank You
@ thank you Richard. I’m busy enough with work, YT and building to keep a side hustle out. Someone will step up to do it.
It's fascinating. The only issue is that companies like Red Wheels are selling 1/25 resin cars for $200. So they're too expensive to be viable.
I had to check out their site. I believe that the big parts are cast resin and the small parts are printed resin. I won’t defend their pricing but I will tell you there is a lot of cost and labor involved in making such a small run of kits.
@@ScaleModelExperiment I get that, but you'd have to be mad to pay that much for a 1/25 model car kit. I've bought $200 kits before, like Itelari's 1/12 Alfa Romeo TC8300, but the motor alone has 100 parts. I do like the idea of making my own though.
@ I get that too. It’s all about the fun you have. I could buy a $10 Ollie’s kit and curse or buy a $160 PZY kit and curse. 😂
How long does the liquid mask need to dry before you can paint?
I’m not sure so I leave it to dry for about an hour.
That is an amazing finish. It looks like a showroom shine.
Thank you so much for watching. It’s funny you say that. For some cars like exotics and show cars that’s an appropriate shine. Now if I was building a NASCAR or old Dodge it wouldn’t be appropriate to make it shine like that.
@@ScaleModelExperiment Could you tell me where you got your sanding sponges? I am having trouble finding 8-12k grit sanding sponges.
@jamesjewett2469 Amazon is where I bought them. Here is my Amazon affiliate link: www.amazon.com/dp/B07YG9S7TY/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_WNDE95V5WEM0V7KMADA1?linkCode=ml2&tag=scalemodelexp-20

I would like to ask, which Chitubox do you use? Mine is a free version and I did not find grid raft under the model. I hava just skate form nothing else. Maybe yours is a paid version. Another question, when you use auto support how many percent the support numbers.Thank you for your answer. Gabor
Hi Gabor, I use the newest version of free Chitubox 2.3. I believe that the grid raft is under advanced settings. There is no percentage but instead you tell it how many mm apart the supports should be. I chose 4.1mm apart. I hope this helps.
yes thanks. I realized mine is older so I updated it. do you always use grid raft? do you use the original settings for printing? how thick is it the raft. thank you again I don’t want to disturb yo
@v8cowboy69 I do use a raft and keep the bottom layers at 5 with 5 transitional layers.
Thanks a lot!👍🏻
